gilroy, moderate rain, and you can see the plume of moisture that will have to make its way in here overnight. this is the actual storm system. most of the energy, the latest forecast models are suggesting will stay a little to the south of the bay area. that's not to say we're not going to get the heavy rain and also the strong winds out of this. just looks like the brunt of the storm will pass a little to the south of us. we do have a wind advisory up for the bay area, beginning at 9:00 tonight. you can expect gusts close to 45 miles-per-hour, but it's going to be santa cruz, monterey bay, that's where the strongest winds will be. high-wind warning in effect there with gusts close to 60 miles-per-hour and that begins at 9:00. we'll take a another look at the storm coming up. >> alan: the bay area saw a combination of hail, wind, and

high surf. we're in pacifica with more. >> reporter: got some crazy weather. we're here at pacifica near the pier. it started to rain heavily a couple minutes ago. there's a high surf advisefully effect right now until 9:00 tonight. we're expecting waves anywhere from 14 to 17 feet, and people are being warned to stay away from the ocean's edge because they could be washed into the ocean by a rogue wave. now let's look and see what the weather system has done the rest of the bay area today. >> this is pea-sized heal falling in santa cruz this morning. this is the racket it makes hitting the roof and deck there was justify hail for children to play in and build a small mountain. in oakland, heavy rains caused a small slide that closed one lane of park boulevard it only caused a smowl traffic delay in mill valley, sandbags are being used

to keep water out of businesses. while the russian river is nowhere near flood stage, its brown color shows the amount of silt come due to the heavy rain. there's a high wind advisory from 9:00 p.m. until 8:00 tomorrow morning. that's a warning to people who are driving high profile vehicles like trucks and campers. that can be very dangerous on the road. so, people are advised to stay off the roads. reporting live in pacifica, abc-7 news. >> alan: snow fell at elevations as low as 2500 feet today in the sierra foot hills of masser insure placer county. traffic is moving slow after a chain reaction crash closed the highway patrol to close the westbound lanes.

or e-mail. the coast guard called off a search tonight for a missing kayaker last seen somewhere near china beach in san rafael. the kayaker was one of seven who left from horseshoe cove this morning. the coast guard is looking between the richmond-san rafael bridge. >> a south san jose neighborhood has been given the all-clear after a noxious chemical release. lisa amin gulezian is live in the neighborhood. we hear people were stuck indoors for hours. lease less that's very true. the warning went out to those around the water treatment plant after a worker noticees a massive tank that holds ammonia was leaking. >> the leak is not getting worse. >> hazmat teams confirmed, 250 gallons of ammonia leaked out of the tank and into an outer containment area which is

like a cement wall built around the tank. none of the ammonia leaked out of the containment area. since this facility is currently closed for con instruction, no water is being filtered, and the ammonia is currently not in use. still, at around 11:30 this morning, san jose police went door-to-door knocking on roughly 40 residents' doors, warning them about the leak and possible amope ya exposure. everyone was told to stay inside, and an emergency operations center, or eoc, came in and officials took over. >> inhaling a large amount of ammonia and having that exposure can cause your medical problems to get worse, can cause other types of medical problems such as bronco spasms, having difficulty breathing. >> when you see this in operation, i am concerned, normally a flood call or some other emergency, but

enough away. when they said 80, and i fell right into that zone. so i didn't choose stay. >> alan: traces of radiation have been found in milk and spinach from farms within 70 miles of the plant. but health officials say they pose no threat. and uc berkeley is gather signs of radioactivity at its department. trace amounts of radioactive iodine and other chemicals were reported. the elements do not naturally occur and are assumed to have originated from the talk -- fukushima site. >> cleanup crews stayed on shore after the storm churned up the waters in santa cruz harbor, eight days after the tsunami from japan sank 14 boats and

>> alan: we have some pictures of the hail that came down, sent in by abc viewers. jeff sent us this one showing a hail-covered intersection in albany. there's washington avenue in richmond. might need to chain up just to get down the street. this is a backyard in albany, covered with a fresh coating of hail. all this video is the kind of stuff that fires if a meteorologist like leigh glaser. did you get in? >> leigh: thunder and lightning last night. the storm system already making inroads towards the bay area. we are already so saturated, you

couple in rain, wind, and we could be look smooth big problems on down the road tonight with the possibility of trees down and power outages. so keep that in mind this evening. you can get a sense that this is really moving in from santa cruz and moving north and gilroy, los gatos, and this is just the start of that -- what we like to call almost a train of moisture that extends well out into the pacific. so we look for increasing rain and wind overnight. showers and isolated thunderstorms will be with us off and on sunday, and then it does look like next week another wet one. look at the storm system. you can see the comma-shaped cloud. the closer this is -- the tighter it is, rather, the stronger the storm. so it's wound up rather tight. just in the last few frames, notice that the cull core of -- actual core of the storm is

moving to the south of san jose, and this is where most of the heavy rain and winds will be and that's why the high-wind warning is in effect mainly for santa cruz and points south. the rest of the bay area, we're under the wind advisory beginning at 9:00 tonight. we have close to 45 miles-per-hour. 7:00 tonight that rain continues to feed in. here's the back edge of the front at 11:00. things start to get interesting. this is going to be a fast mover. and from san jose points southward, that's where the heaviest rain will be through the course of the overnight hours. by 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, the front moves through and we continue with scattered showers, and cooler air and that could trigger a few isolated storms. flash-vlad watch begins tonight at 11:00 for the santa cruz yeah, down towards monterey bay. that obviously where the heaviest rainfall will be.

we're looking at the possibility of four to five inches. elsewhere, one, one and a half, possibly two muchs of rain across the rest of the bay area, close to three inches in extreme north bay areas in the sierra, already picked up 16 inches of snow last night. expecting one to two additional feet above the 7,000-foot level so the winter storm warning is in effect until 11:00 tomorrow evening, and the bulk of the rain overnight tonight and the wind overnight tonight and early tomorrow morning, by tomorrow afternoon, still see scattered showers and may see sun breaks as well, and temperatures pretty much uniform in the mid-to-upper 50s. tomorrow afternoon, spring arrives so we'll look for more spring showers for us as we head into monday. could be heavy at times. we gate brief respite on tuesday, and then another large
